Access to Makerere University has been restricted for one to enter you must have a university or national ID or Admission letter.

Everyone is subjected to a thorough security check before you are allowed to pass through.

This comes after concern from all sections of the public including religious leaders like the Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who called for dialogue to solve Uganda’s problems and for Makerere University the administration should sit with the students to solve their concerns.

This morning Makerere University top management through the first Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics, Professor Umar Kakumba called for a meet with the student’s guild leadership in the Senior Common Room over the stalemate resulting from the 15 per cent tuition increment, which started on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 that has disrupted business at the campus.

It follows days of unrest at the university, where students are protesting against a cumulative increment of tuition and functional fees. The 15 per cent increment is being implemented as part of a policy, passed by the University Council in June 2018.

The week-long students protest against the fees hike saw dozens of student arrested by the military and police. Security officers broke into student rooms in halls of residences vandalized property and brutalized students.

However the guild president Kateregga, on his part, has tabled four demands that the students want the university administration to address, which include the immediate reinstatement of suspended students, revocation of the warning letters, suspension of the cumulative 15 per cent tuition and functional fees increment policy, the de-gazettement of the Students Guild Electoral Reforms/Regulations and the immediate improvement of sanitation facilities in the Halls of Residence.
