Members of Parliament sitting on the Parliamentary Natural Resource Committee have refused to consider the coming financial year budget for Rural Electrification Agency-REA.

This came after the Energy and Mineral Development Minister, Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu informed the committee that cabinet approved the merger of REA into the Ministry to operate as a department.

She said that this is part of the government plans of merging all the electricity agencies like Generation, Transmission agencies in the coming three years.

However, this wasn’t welcomed by the committee members chaired by the Kiboga East MP Dr. Keffa Kiwanuka saying the cabinet can’t just resolve a matter without parliament’s knowledge and approval.

It’s from that point that the committee demanded evidence of the cabinet minutes that approved the merger and also the solicitor general’s legal advice to the effect of the decision which the minister didn’t have to provide.

Now the committee has agreed not to pass the REA vote of 123 until a legal opinion and evidence of the cabinet minutes are provided to the committee.
