Legislators on the Parliamentary Forum on Children want members of the public to desist from giving money to street kids, saying it encourages them to stay on the roads in the city.

Hundreds of children, some as young as one year mostly from Karamoja, hang around major streets in Kampala begging money from motorists and pedestrians usually escorted by adults who watch them from a distance.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the commemoration of day of the African child, MPs lost kind words like Bernard Atiku, the Ayivu county parliamentary representative who insisted on stopping the public from giving money and food to them

Atiku also reminded government to implement the Children amendment act 2016 which recognizes the setting up of an Authority that will monitor and check on any form of violence exercised on children.

The Mpigi Woman MP, Sarah Nakawunde, said it is unfortunate that parents are allowing their children to be exploited, demanding the city authorities together with the ministry of gender to sweep the streets of Kampala off the children to protect them.
