The Government has set to partner with Makerere University to offer online lessons for Kiswahili language to leaders starting with the Ministers and Members of Parliament.

This comes after Cabinet this week made Kiswahili language compulsory in both primary and secondary schools in the country which is a fulfillment of the 21st East African Community summit directive in Uganda to adopt this as an official language of the community.

The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Charge of the East African Community -EAC Rebecca Kadaga says that lecturers for Kiswahili language at Makerere University will conduct a one hour lesson for both Ministers and MPs from 9am-10am Monday to Friday.

She adds that later, the lessons will be extended to local government officers and will also ensure that Kiswahili language determines a student’s qualification from Primarily to Secondary and at the University.

Kadaga has further noted that they are also to ensure that all Airlines adopt Kiswahili language by combining it with English in communicating to travelers entering and exiting the country through Entebbe International Airport.
