The Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Eng. Hilary Onek and the United Nations (UN) agencies have disagreed over the quality and procurement of food for the refugees.

This was during an announcement of a 36 billion shillings contribution by the Japanese Government towards refugees and host communities at a press conference held at the Media Center in Kampala.

Minister Onek first revealed that Government was to stop World Food Programme (WFP) from importing food for refugees since there is enough food produced in the country.

He argued that this will promote the local markets and ensure that money stays in the country’s economy instead of importing it from the foreign countries yet the beneficiaries are within a food growing country.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, Rosa Malango however stood up to justify the continued importation of food citing quality issues with food from Uganda although Onek rejected her position.

Uganda is the largest refugee hosting country in Africa with more than 1.45 million refugees and asylum seekers including 83 percent women and children.
