With hours to the celebration of the Uganda Martyrs Day which is commemorated on the 3rd of June every year, the Martyrs’ shrine at Namugongo is becoming a beehive of activities.

Jinja Diocese is to animate this year’s Martyr’s Day Celebrations at the Catholic shrine under the theme; “Lord increase our faith”.

On the sidelines, Police says currently 48 people have been arrested at both the Catholic Shrine and the Anglican Site over theft and impersonation plus one child reported missing.

While addressing journalists at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, Luke Oweyesigire the deputy spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police said that Police and sister security agencies are doing everything possible to make this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations successful without any security threats.

Oweyesigire adds that Friday being the vigil of Martyrs Day celebration, many self-seekers flock Namugongo but security will not allow them to disturb the relative peace since they have deployed heavily and routine checkups are being conducted.

Earlier, Rogers Nsereko Kauma, the Traffic Police Commandant Kampala Metropolitan announced the closure of certain roads starting from midnight on June 2.

The Kireka-Namugongo road was designated as one-way, Kyaliwajjala-Naalya was for vehicles leaving Namugongo, and Kyaliwajjala-Namugongo was reserved for foot pilgrims and emergency vehicles.
