Makerere University Guild Council has rejected the regulations which were passed by the University Council to guide the election of students’ leaders.

Last year Council passed regulations which include empowering the Dean of students to appoint the members of the Electoral commission, restricting campaign rallies to only four and only at the University main campus among others.

During their emergency Guild Council meeting held at Makerere today, the members stated that the powers to amend the students’ constitution are vested in the students’ council and not the management or the University Council.

The MAK Guild President Salim Wele told the members that he has written to the University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe expressing rejection of the regulations and seeking for its withdrawal.

The students also gave an ultimatum of 48 hours for the University to reconcile with lectures under the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) for them to resume classes, only warning to take action come Friday this week once nothing is done.

Currently, there is no business at Makerere University following a sit down strike declared by MUASA after the vice chancellor suspended their chairperson Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi.
