Makerere University has doubled to 40 from 20 scholarships given to young ladies from needy families as a way of encouraging affirmative action.

 

Since 2011, Makerere University management embarked on promoting girl education at the University by offering scholarships to girls who are in less privileged families.

 

During the second day if the 70th MaK University graduation ceremony at the campus, the Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabus Nawangwe said that effective of the next academic year, the number of scholarships given to girl child will be doubled with intentions of attracting more female students into joining the University.

 

Nawangwe also added that the University has decided to award an Honorary Doctorate to the Chancellor of German Angela Markel for promoting global health.

 

The Chancellor of Makerere University Prof Ezra Suruma asked economist to devise more technological innovation which can create jobs for the increasing numbers of graduates.

 

For this 70th Graduation Ceremony, a total of 13510 students are expected to be conferred degree and awarded diplomas of Makerere University in various disciplines by the Friday this week.
