Authorities in Nyundo sub county Kisoro district have passed a resolution to poison stray dogs and cats in the area that are killing farmers’ animals.

The decision was announced by Nyundo sub county chief, Christine Ntakirutimana saying the planned collaborative measures by the district production office and district veterinary office is to address the challenge of stray dogs and cats that are killing sheep, goats and other domesticated animals including birds in the area.

According to Ntakirutimana, authorities have devised plans which involve trapping and use of poison to eliminate the redundant animals.

At least 91 sheep and goats have been reported killed by stray dogs in the last two weeks in Nyundo sub county prompting authorities to launch a two weeks killing by poison bait operation against the stray dogs and cats.

The Nyundo sub county LCIII Chairperson, Fred Mutanbuzi Kanyaruju said stray dogs and cats are not only a threat to Nyundo but also the neighboring sub-counties of Bukimbiri, and Nyakabande. He called for a collective exercise for both affected areas.
