Anti-IEBC protests turned tragic in Siaya after a 41-year-old man died.

The man was caught up in the scuffle and is said to have died of shock after police fired teargas to disperse protesting youths.

It is said the deceased believed to be coming from Siaya county referral hospital for medication while passing along the county commissioner’s compound moments before the youths stormed the compound that is also housing IEBC offices dropped and died as he was running after police lobed teargas on the protestors.

Officials from the Red Cross Society who attended to the deceased at the scene confirmed the man dead.

The residents led by Governor Cornell Rasanga, MPs Samuel Atandi (Alego Usonga), Christine Ombaka (Woman rep), Speaker George Okode and a host of Siaya MCAs linked the police to the tragedy.

Rasanga accused the police for failing to comply with the constitution to protect the lives of innocent Kenyans threatening to take legal action if the government fails to take responsibility and compensate the family of the deceased.

Diplomats have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga to stop playing political games and undermining the electoral commission ahead of the repeat presidential elections.

They also warned that hardliners and inciters on both sides of the political divide could be sanctioned by their countries, travel bans and denial of visas included, if they are seen to be advocating for violence and spreading hate speech.

The United States ambassador Robert Godec and 14 other envoys spoke of their concerns after a meeting with the IEBC leadership headed by Chairman Wafula Chebukati, with commissioners Consolata Maina, Roselyn Akombe and Paul Kurgat present.
