The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga has suggested to the leadership of Kampala Capital City Authority –KCCA to change the Impala monument to a strategically visible location.

In October 2020, KCCA heads including the Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and conservationist leaders from the Uganda Wildlife Authority –UWA including Sam Mwandha, the ED and Chairman Board of Directors Dr. Panta Leon Mukasa Banda Kasoma unveiled the Impala monument at Jubilee House in Kampala.

Kampala City derives its name from the animal Impala, a type of antelope which used to graze on the slopes of Mengo and the other surrounding hills. The name “Hill of the Impala (Akasozi Ka Impala) was given specifically to the hill on which Captain Fredrick Lord Lugard, a British administrator, established his camp (Fort) on December18, 1890.

The name was later rephrased to Kampala and has taken root since then.

While receiving Shs5million from KCCA- ED Dorothy Kisaka for buying the Kabaka Birthday Run kits at Bulange – Mengo in support of the Run, Katikkiro Mayiga said that Impala monument once placed at visible site, it will give out a clear picture of Kampala heritage just like it is seen in Paris –France, New York –USA among other cities where heritage monuments are visually located.

He also proposes to KCCA to consider adding the Kasubi Tombs to Kampala heritage monuments due to its historical background.

Kisaka while delivering her speech before handing over the Shs5m for the kits to Katikkiro promised on behalf of the Authority to consider Mayiga’s suggestion under their campaign of reorganizing the city.
