Government is in plans of building up a database that will help in tracking and reminding blood donors to donate and save lives of those in need of blood.

 

Dr. Charles Olaro, the Director Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health says donors will be categorized according to the blood group they do have and those with Rhesus positive will be called to donate to those in need.

 

He said this while at the City Square in Kampala officiating the Blood donation drive of collecting about 800 units of blood over a 3-day period in Kampala, Jinja and Mbarara districts by Nile Breweries in partnership with the Uganda Red Cross Society –URCS and the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services -UBTS.

 

Dr Olaro adds that the country needs over 450,000 units of blood every year which is 1% of the country’s total population in the form of blood units as per the global standards.

 

Josephin Okwera, the Director Health and Social Services at the URCS says blood has mostly been given to victims of road traffic injuries following people like pregnant mothers, children with bone marrow abnormalities and those living with sickle cell.

 

Onapito Ekomoloit, the Legal and Corporate Affairs Director Nile Breweries Limited reaffirmed the company commitment to support life-saving and improving initiatives such as blood donation by focusing on road safety during this drive period.

 

The donation drive is in commemoration of the World Blood Donor Day that is marked today under this year’s theme; Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives.
