The government has officially commenced the implementation of the 2020 fisheries licensing guidelines by conducting the licensing exercise for both commercial and recreational activities.

 

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, the exercise that started on January 1st, 2022 will be carried out until March 31 this year with all fisheries licensing fees payment processes done in accordance with the Non-Tax Revenue -NTR collection procedures as directed by the Uganda Revenue Authority – URA.

 

The new regulations of fishing activities released in 2020 by the Agriculture Ministry show that engaging in any activity on lakes and even in swamps for commercial or recreational purposes will not be done without a license.

 

Hellen Adoa, the State Minister for Fisheries says that the exercise will involve registration, application; vetting, and issuance of licenses but species-specific licenses are issued for Lake Victoria.

 

The new regulations will also cover boats and canoe builders, fishermen, trucks, dealers, and transporters of smoked and dried fish as well as fishmongers.

 

The Minister however shows that 150,000shs is the fee for recreation fishing permit and 100,000shs is for each vessel on Lake Victoria, Edward, George, Albert, Kyoga, and Wamala yet 50,000shs on minor lakes and Nakivale among others.
