The government has finally accorded the late former Presidential Candidate, Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere a 17-gun salute, despite his wife’s rejection of the honor.

 

Earlier on, Prof. Germina Namatovu Ssemogerere, wife to the deceased Dr. Ssemogerere had requested that the state refrain from firing a gun salute during his burial.

 

During her speech to mourners gathered at Nattale village, Nkumba in Busiro, the widow stated that her late husband did not wish to be associated with guns during his lifetime.

 

President Museveni through the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja gave the family a condolence payment of 20 million Ugandan shillings.

 

Prime Minister Nabbanja said that she was simply a delegate who can’t take any decisions, contrary to the directives.

 

Meanwhile, the National Unity Platform -NUP Party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has also mourned the late Ssemogerere and urged Ugandans to make sure his dream of a peaceful transition of power comes true in Uganda.

Many dignitaries graced Ssemogerere’s sendoff ceremony and these included; the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja who represented Government, the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga on behalf of the kingdom, Dr. Kizza Besigye, Ministers and Members of Parliament among others.

Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, a former leader of the Democratic Party, was a crucial figure in Ugandan politics until he retired from politics in 2005. He served as the party’s leader for over 25 years.

 

At the age of 90, he passed away last week. It was reported that he died from a stomach infection, according to reports.
