The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal has officially started preparations for the June 3rd Uganda Martyrs Celebrations that are annually conducted at the Catholic Shrine Namugongo.

The Diocese was chosen to animate this year’s Martyrs day celebrations by the Uganda Episcopal Conference -UEC on February 14th 2022, a period said to be short for the preparation that is characterized by a series of events including pilgrimage before the climax on June 3rd.

The Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese who is also the Vice Chairman of Uganda Episcopal Conference –UEC Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa says that the diocese is ready to animate this celebrations amidst the lockdown and Covid-19 post effects.

The Celebrations are to be conducted under the theme; “Baptised and Sent to witness Christ with Love and Hope Mathew 28:19”, with a budget cost of UGX 1 billion that will cover the necessities for the successful organization of the event.

Bishop Muhiirwa says they are still waiting for government’s guidance on the best way to organize such an event that attracts mammoth crowds of local and international pilgrims.

He says a steering committee is headed by Fr. Charles Oyo assisted by Dr. Patrick Birungi who has also extended the coordination role especially for the Kampala members that is led by Hon Tom Butime and Hon. Frank Tumwebaze.
