Barely a month to the June 3rd Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations at Namugongo, this year’s animator His Grace Dr. Emmanuel Obbo says that 5 million pilgrims are expected to attend prayers at the Catholic Shrine Namugongo.

In a press conference held this afternoon at the Uganda Catholic Secretariat, the Tororo Archbishop Obbo said already notices from Malawi, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania have been received.

A total of 4000 first official foot group of pilgrims from Tororo Archdiocese will be flagged off on May 20th at Martyrs Cathedral Nyangore.

He explains that they expect the group that is to trek 212 Kilometers to set off on May 25th and arrive at Namugongo on June 1st under the security guidance with a well labeled banner bearing the theme of this year; Let us walk in the light of God as a Family.

On the side of fundraising, the Church is still hunting for the remaining 330 million shillings to cover the budget of 720mshs and this is targeted in a fundraising dinner that has been set on May 17th at hotel Africana in the evening with each card going to 150,000/=, while a table of 10 will cost 2mshs.

He further said a walk of faith from the Martyrs Shrine Munyonyo to Old Kampala will be held on May 12th headed by the Catholic Youth and Lay Apostolate Office along with the government through the Uganda Tourism Board.

The Secretary General Uganda Episcopal conference Msgr John Baptist Kauta challenged the media against irresponsible reporting at such functions like reporting about those who are taking alcohol, pork and engaging in reckless behaviours as part of the pilgrims saying capturing such groups for media news is no point but rather a shaming the Catholic Church.
