The opposition Forum for Democratic change (FDC) has demanded on Parliament to heavily task the Minister for ICT and National Guidance Frank Tumwebaze for demeaning its orders against the deactivation of Sim-card.

FDC Spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda says they don’t expect Parliament to keep quiet when people are suffering their lines off yet Minister Tumwebaze’s directives to telecom companies to switch off all unverified, un-validated and unregistered simcards was a contempt of Parliament’s resolution.

Last week, the Speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga directed the Parliamentary Rules, Discipline and Privileges committee to investigate the minister for defying a resolution of parliament to extend the simcard verification exercise for a year.

Earlier, parliament observed that it was important to give Ugandans enough time to register and obtain National Identity Cards before simcards are switched off.

Responding to the allegations, Minister Tumwebaze says he is ready to defend himself on allegations of contempt of parliament.

She invoked section rule 211 of the rules of procedure of parliament and forwarded the matter to Rules, Discipline and Privileges committee of parliament.  The committee has summoned Tumwebaze to appear Tuesday to explain himself.
