The Elder persons in Uganda have on Tuesday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2021 United Nations World Elder Abuse awareness day by asking government to increase elderly monthly Fund from 25,000 to Hundred thousand (100,000) for better use by elder persons.

 

The United Nations world elder Abuse Awareness Day commemorated every 15th June was designated to create awareness on the Abuse, rights Violations and suffering inflicted on elder people, this year’s Theme is Building rezerience among elder persons during Covid-19 pandemic.

 

Canon Joram Tibasiima a representative of elder person of western region in 11th parliament and the outgoing Chairperson of National Council for elder persons, during the press conference at media center today said that the money being given to them is not enough due to high prices of things in the country mainly during this time of covid19.

 

Tibasiima adds that if the money is increased to at least 50,000/= or 100,000/= shilling to enable elder persons to buy food and other essential needs to cater for their families because they always have dependants especially grand children.

 

However he has called upon government to revise the years of elder persons that are currently receiving money from 80 yrs to 60 yrs and above because the number of people aged 80 and above is low living behind many other vulnerable elder persons unattended to.
