Education sector is looking for an additional 160 billion shillings to cater for its unfunded priorities.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Education, the Minister of State for Primary Education Rosemary Sseninde accompanied by the officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports noted that there is need for urgency in reconsideration to meeting the funding gap to cater for government school pay off wages among other operational requirements.

The committee has been chaired by Mbale Woman Member of Parliament Connie Galiwango.

However, the Commissioner for Education, Planning and Policy Analysis Fredrick Matyama says they face a funding gap of not less than 4 billion shillings meant for 100 grant aided community owned primary schools.

He further says that another 4 billion shillings is needed for Girl Guide and Boys’ scouts, yet 9 billion shillings is for construction of 20 secondary schools in sub counties where they have no secondary school.

Matyama also says that they need 18bnshs to recruit science teachers, 7 billion shillings to fund 15,000 undergraduates and 300 diplomas for students under the Higher Education Students Financing Board, 25bnshs for counterpart funding of education projects.
