The Ministry of Education and Sports has attributed absence of Occupational Permits and failure to implement the 2008 circular on Security and Safety to the persistent fires reported in private schools.

Last week, Police preliminary findings pointed at electricity as possible cause of the fire outbreak that gutted two schools dormitories at Bilal Islamic Primary and Secondary School located in Bwaise, Kawempe Division.

Addressing the journalists at Media Center in Kampala today, the Education Ministry’s Spokesperson Dr. Denis Mugimba says that their investigations shows 5 private schools of the 6 that got burnt since the reopening of this academic year.

He says that the trend of fire has been the same in the last 14 years with aggrieved students, teachers and school neighbors being behind these fires that are mostly witnessed by boarding students in the dormitories.

Mugimba however notes that the ministry together with the stakeholders is to review these 2008 Security and Safety guidelines and ensure they are implemented by school management.
