Government has disclosed that the national Electoral Commission (EC) will have its permanent home before the 2026 general elections.

This has been confirmed by the head of the National Housing and Construction Company Kenneth Kaijuka saying that the EC offices will be permanently based at Lweza in Lubowa, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso district on a 10 acre free hold land measurement.

Kaijuka said this during the official opening of the Electoral Commission temporal head offices located on plot 1,2,3and 15 seventh street industrial area in Kampala on Thursday.

Present at the function was the Minister for Works and Transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala who said that the commission’s permanent headquarters once completed will accommodate a Tally Center for Presidential results declaration exercise which will stop EC from hiring venues for that activity.

The Minister for Constitutional Affairs Norbert Mao pledged to support the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) to ensure that they get funds to complete the Interim Electoral Commission (IEC) offices and assured Ugandans that all these are part of the plan to ensure that the commission carries out its work for a peaceful transition of power in Uganda.

The chairperson of the commission Justice Simon Byabakama says that though their temporary home can’t house all its 310 staff, the place is better compared to its former premises which had always proved difficult during the rainy season.

The commission will be renting these premises in the Industrial area for a period of 18months though the amount of money that will be spent for that period hasn’t been revealed.
