The Bunyoro Regional COVID-19 Taskforce has announced a total lockdown on Kyangwali Refugee settlement area in Kikuube district following numerous cases of the Coronavirus reported in the settlement.

Richard Tabaro, the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner says that the lockdown starts today after a Regional COVID-19 Taskforce meeting held at the Kikuube district headquarters in regard to the high number of refugees in the settlement area and with the increased cases of COVID-19 within the settlement.

He says for a period of two weeks no one will be allowed to enter or leave the settlement area. Tabaro says not any form of business will be allowed in Kyangwali settlement area as well.

The Regional COVID-19 Taskforce together with the Bunyoro Regional Security committee have also imposed night curfew in the whole of the Kyangwali sub county in order to contain the further spread of the Pandemic. The curfew starts at 7pm and ends at 6:30pm.

Deo Obura, the Albertine region police commander says they are ready to provide all the necessary security to the COVID-19 Taskforce to ensure that no one violates the imposed lockdown in Kyangwali settlement area.

Kyangwali Refugee settlement area which is home to more than 120,072 refugees, according to Uganda-Refugee Statistics as of June 2020 has recorded 19 COVID-19 cases with one death in a period of two weeks.

The national case tally stands at 2,524, with 26 deaths, 1,268 recoveries, with currently 726 active cases.

Samples tested so far are 359,289.
