The National Planning Authority-NPA has projected an increase in new cases of Covid-19 for the week of December 12th to 18th with an average of 58 new cases per day and a weekly total of 404 new cases.

Abraham Muwanguzi, the NPA Manager for Science Planning Department says that the weekly Covid-19 Projection Model also predicts a daily average of 70 new cases and a weekly total of 490 in the week of December 19th to 25th.

Last week, Uganda recorded low number of cases over the past 2 months, an upward trend has been observed in the last two weeks.

Muwanguzi also revealed the projections on the African continent where South Africa has continued to record increasing new COVID-19 cases.

On the African continent, South Africa has continued to record increasing new COVID-19 cases, with 109,053 cases recorded for the week ending 11th December compared to 62,000 the week before.

Several other African countries have recorded increases in new COVID-19 cases including Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Nigeria and Namibia, among others.

Countries that have recorded a decrease in the number of cases include Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Sudan.

Muwanguzi says that internal factors are driving new cases in most countries in Africa, except for Lethoso, Benin, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and South Sudan.

Elsewhere, US, Germany and United Kingdom are the top three countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases, respectively. Russia, Turkey, Czechia, Hungary, Austria and India, among others, experienced a decline in the number of cases.
