The space for corruption in Uganda has narrowed according to the Inspectorate of Government-IG despite the persistent cases reported annually.

The Deputy Inspector General of Government (D/IGG) George Bamugemereire says this is due to the many laws and Government agencies and institutions that have been set up in Uganda to date.

He revealed this during a media practitioners’ engagement meeting with officials from the Inspectorate on its role in implementing the Leadership Code Act.

Meanwhile, while replying a question from a journalist about former National Unity Platform Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s acquisition of a brand new car that is the talk of town currently, he said they can’t inquire into it until the upcoming declaration of assets by leaders from March 1st to 31st 2021 is done.

Speaking at the same event, the State Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Simon Lokodo warned against the vice of anticipatory declaration of assets and liabilities which is done by some leaders saying it’s not only criminal but also doesn’t give a clear picture of their worth.

He also commended the IG for the efforts they have put in the fight against corruption through which they have recovered assets worth almost 10 billion shillings in the ending financial year.
