The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Most Rev. Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has warned that the county’s quest for mitigating the impacts of Climate Change will remain futile once the implementation of the laws and policies governing waste disposal and management remains slow.
Dr Kaziimba says that the country still witnesses unmanaged garbage collection, littering of all kinds of waste material all over the streets, homes, churches, schools, roads, market and public spaces yet the law was enacted.
He said this while speaking before the congregants that participated in the Church of Uganda’s cleaning exercise in Kiwunya zone, Nakulabye Rubaga division in joining the rest of Africa to commemorate the Africa Climate Week 2023 (ACW23) under the theme; Cities, Urban and Rural settlement achieving zero waste and circular economy.
He says the slow implementation of the National Environment Act 2019 has facilitated the persistent waste disposal and management particularly on plastics and polythene bags and this affects human health and people’s livelihoods.
Dr Kaziima however calls on the government, Civil Society Organizations, Political and religious leaders of all the denominations among others to play their roles in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
