The Caritas Kampala Executive Director Fr. John Peter Musumba has expressed his worry over the improper use of pit latrines in some schools, saying this risks the students’ health and education.

At least 15 lined-up pit Latrines have been constructed by Caritas Kampala in selected schools from the districts of Wakiso, Butambala and Mpigi for the last two years and one month under the Enhancement of Wash and Menstrual Hygiene Management project that is funded by KinderMissionsWerk – Germany.

While commissioning the mega lined-up pit latrine at St Theresa Mitala Maria Primary School in Mitala Maria Vicariate, Kampala Archdiocese, Fr Musumba says most of the students misuse these latrines by defecating on the flow and painting on the walls of the latrine with feces which is a health risk factor and destroys the facility.

He says these latrines last for 25years once put in proper use and mostly cater for hygiene of female pupils who are menstruating but they intend to revisit all schools where they have constructed these facilities and award those with good condition.

The Head Teacher St Theresa Mitala Maria Primary School, Rosemary Mubiru noted out challenges affecting female students including limited sanitary towels and long distance from home to school among others.

Before St Theresa, Caritas Kampala Women’s Desk commissioned a modern line-up pit latrine worth Shs20 Million at St Kizito Ssenyomo Primary School in Gombe Butambala district to accommodate and improve the hygiene of female pupils.
