Pope Francis has appointed Rt. Rev. Bishop Paul Ssemogerere the Bishop of Kasana Luweero diocese as the Apostolic Administrator of Kampala Archdiocese for the time being.

Pope Nuncio Archbishop Luigi Bianco conveyed the message of the Pope at the last prayers to send off the late Kampala Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga at Rubaga Cathedral.

An apostolic administrator is a priest, and usually a bishop, who is assigned by the pope to govern or oversee an apostolic administration area where a diocese has no substantive head.

On his behalf Archbishop Bianco said he enjoyed a cordial working relationship since he came to Uganda with Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and believes his priestly call has been done well not forgetting that he first participated in the ecumenical way of the cross following his death that truly seals his mission in God’s vineyard.

Bishop Paul Ssemogerere was born on 30th June 1956 is a Roman Catholic prelate who is also the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero, in Uganda where he was appointed Bishop of Kasana-Luweero on 4th June 2008 to replace Dr.Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who had been elevated to Archbishop.

 

He was ordained a priest on 3rd June 1983 and consecrated Bishop on 23rd August 2008by Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

 

He attended Kigero Primary School before transferring to Kisubi Boys Primary School and then studied at St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School Katende, where he completed his O-Level studies.

 

In 1976, Ssemogerere and seven other young men became pioneer students at St Mbaaga Seminary at Ggaba, this was the first class of this seminary, which specializes in admitting men to train as priests when they are older than usual, and without attending minor Seminary.

 

In 1978, the late Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga sent Ssemogerere to the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1982.

 

On 21th November 1981, he was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Rembert George Weakland, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

 

He was ordained a Priest on 3rd June 1983 at Kampala, by Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga, Archbishop of Kampala and he served as a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, at Christ the King in Kampala until 4th June 2008 when he was appointed Bishop.

 

On June 4th, 2008 he was appointed the Bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Kasana-Luweero and was consecrated on August 23rd in the same year at the diocesan cathedral by Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, assisted by Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Ugo, and Cardinal Emeritus of Kampala and Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam, Titular Archbishop of Amantia and Papal Nuncio to Uganda at that time.
