Buganda Road Magistrates Court has denied bail to Ugandan opposition leader and former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye on charges of inciting violence.

Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, was arrested again on Tuesday and charged with inciting violence a week after his release on the same charges.

On Friday, Besigye together with his co-accused Samuel Lubega Mukaaku appeared before Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza and sought for bail through their lawyer Erias Lukwago presenting 2 sureties each who included Dennis Onekalit, MP Kitgum Municipality, Doreen Nyanjura Deputy Lord Mayor (Besigye), Margaret Okuli and Sulaiman Kidandala former Deputy Lord Mayor (Mukaku).

However, to their surprise while making his ruling, Grade One Magistrate Muhumuza turned down their application on grounds that he had no guarantee that if the accused are released on bail they won’t be causing trouble again after repeating similar activities when they were released few days ago on 6th June 2022 on the same charges.

He further said that court is not a theatre of politics where everyone plays games but it should be respected thus denying the application and ordered the accused to come back to court on July 1st, 2022 for mention of their case.

Defense Counsel Lukwago says they are to appeal against this court’s decision.
