The Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere has called upon Christians to embrace the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census to ensure better planning for the country.

He gave this message after hosting a team from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) who had paid a visit at his residence in Lubaga on Thursday to ask him to mobilize the Catholic community to embrace the exercise.

The census will be conducted in 10 days from May 10th 2024 which will be a public holiday to enable Ugandans partake of the exercise till May 19th.

Archbishop Ssemogerere says this process is very vital to everyone and the country at large for better planning hence urging Christians not to shun away from the enumerators to miss out on being counted.

He however calls on UBOS to collect and publish the right statistics which will also be helpful to other institutions like the Catholic Church to help them plan for their people.

Albert Byamugisha, the UBOS Board Chairperson assured the public that their information will be kept confidential and they shouldn’t fear sharing them to the enumerators.

The government last held the National Population and Housing Census in 2014.

At that time, the results indicated that Uganda had a population of 34 million people and while it is now estimated that there are 46 million people in the country, this can only be verified through a national census.

The exercise will help the government acquire vital statistical information, including how many people there are in Uganda, where they are and what they own, for economic and social development planning and administrative purposes.
