The Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifah Buzeki, has commissioned the construction of the Shs32 billion Ggaba Market, a project expected to serve more than 2,000 traders.
Speaking at the commissioning and groundbreaking ceremony in Ggaba, Buzeki cautioned traders against engaging in activities that could disrupt or delay the construction works.
She said the project is being funded by the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD) under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area development programme.
Buzeki explained that Shs32 billion has been allocated for the construction works, with the contract awarded to Ambitious Construction Company Limited. The project is expected to be completed within two years, followed by a one-year defects-liability period to allow for monitoring and addressing any issues that may arise from the construction.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Kampala, Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye, directed the Kampala Resident District Commissioner (RDC) to ensure that the land on which the market will be constructed is properly surveyed and its boundaries clearly established.
Kyofatogabye said proper surveying would help safeguard the land against potential encroachment and land grabbing.
The Lord Mayor of Kampala, Engineer Ronald Balimwezo, called on the contractors to ensure value for money throughout the construction process.
Balimwezo also urged the government and relevant authorities to prioritise proper planning, saying this would help prevent wastage of taxpayers’ money and ensure that public projects deliver their intended benefits.
The new Ggaba Market is expected to provide improved trading facilities for thousands of vendors while contributing to the wider redevelopment of Kampala’s markets and urban infrastructure.
