Late Afrigo – Band director Moses Matovu

Police in Kabalagala have arrested a woman identified as Rose Tumusiime to assist with investigations into the death of veteran musician and Afrigo Band icon Moses Matovu.

Police are also searching for a male suspect who is alleged to have assaulted Matovu during a confrontation early Thursday morning.

According to police, Matovu was attacked by unknown assailants in Kibuli Market Zone B, Makindye Division, Kampala, at around 5:30 a.m.

Police say the musician had reportedly visited his girlfriend’s residence, and that as the two were leaving, they were allegedly confronted by a man believed to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.

During the confrontation, Matovu reportedly sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider but later succumbed to his injuries.

Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said the male suspect has been identified but fled the scene and is being pursued.

Kawala said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death and urged the public to remain calm as police continue with the inquiry.

Matovu, a veteran saxophonist and long-serving member and leader of Afrigo Band, was 77.

His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s music industry, where he was regarded as one of the country’s most enduring musical figures.
