Thirteen senior government officials in Busia District have been arrested over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of government funds.
The arrests followed findings presented by the Minister of State for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, during an anti-corruption campaign meeting held at the Busia District headquarters on Wednesday.
Barugahara said the officials had allegedly been implicated in financial losses to government and would be required to account for the funds.
As part of the campaign, the minister inspected several government facilities in the district, including Busia Main Market, Busia Secondary School, Sikuda Seed Secondary School, Sikuda Health Centre III and Busia Health Centre IV.
Barugahara said the government remains committed to fighting corruption and ensuring that public resources are properly managed and used for their intended purposes.
During the meeting, Johnson Wafuba, the Busia Deputy Town Clerk, told the minister that the municipality had faced challenges in managing Yalelo fish vendors.
The minister’s visit is part of government efforts to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery and address alleged misuse of public resources in local governments.
