Uganda Airlines Fails to Explain Recovery of US$100,000 Lost Through Ticketing

Uganda Airlines has failed to explain to Parliament’s Committee on Commissions

Uganda Airlines has failed to explain to Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) the measures being taken to recover US$100,000 lost through flight ticketing.

The matter was raised during the committee’s scrutiny of the Auditor General’s report for the 2024/25 financial year, which also indicates that Uganda Airlines incurred losses of about Shs230 billion during the period under review.

The airline’s management team, led by Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake, appeared before COSASE to respond to concerns regarding the airline’s financial performance and operational challenges.

During the meeting, Wake acknowledged that the airline is experiencing difficulties arising from the grounding of some aircraft due to a shortage of spare parts.

He explained that Rolls-Royce, which supplies parts for some of the affected aircraft engines, had stopped providing the required components, further disrupting the airline’s operations.

Wake said Uganda Airlines is currently leasing aircraft from other operators to maintain its routes as it waits for new aircraft on order.

According to the CEO, the new aircraft are expected to be delivered in seven to eight years.

The revelations have raised fresh questions about Uganda Airlines’ financial sustainability, aircraft availability and its ability to address operational challenges and recover revenue losses.

The committee is expected to seek further accountability from the airline’s management on the recovery of the US$100,000 and other concerns highlighted in the Auditor General’s report.
