Security Minister Seeks More Time to Respond to Queries on Digital Number Plates

The Minister of Security, Gen. Jim Muhwezi

The Minister of Security, Gen. Jim Muhwezi, has asked Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure for more time to respond to queries regarding the implementation of Uganda’s digital number plate project.

The committee had summoned Minister Muhwezi, officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport, and other stakeholders involved in the implementation of the digital number plate system to provide clarification on the project.

However, appearing before the committee chaired by Mbarara City West MP Mwine Mpaka, Muhwezi admitted that he was not adequately prepared to respond to the questions raised by the legislators.

He consequently requested additional time to gather and provide the necessary information to the committee. The request was granted.

The development comes amid concerns over the implementation of the digital number plate project, including reports questioning the capacity of Russian company Joint Stock Company Global Security, which was contracted to oversee the full rollout of the system.

The committee is expected to continue scrutinising the project and seek further explanations from the responsible ministries and other stakeholders.
