NRM Reopens EALA Nominations, Sets Date for LCI Residual Elections

NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has reopened nominations for Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) after an earlier exercise was halted.

Parliament Clerk Adolf Mwesigye suspended the March nomination process because two elected Members of Parliament, Dennis Namara and James Kakooza, had not yet been sworn in, meaning their parliamentary seats had not officially fallen vacant.

Speaking to the media, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi said the vacancies now exist, allowing the nomination process to resume.

He explained that the earlier exercise was canceled because the party had moved prematurely.

Dr. Odoi said the 38 NRM members who had already applied during the initial exercise will not be required to pay the nomination fee again.

However, new applicants must pay a non-refundable fee of two million shillings.

Nominations opened today and will close on July 1, 2026. Successful candidates will serve in the East African Legislative Assembly until December 2027.

Meanwhile, Dr. Odoi announced that the NRM will hold residual elections for Local Council I (LCI) flag bearers on July 10, 2026.

He said the elections are intended to fill positions that remained vacant after the party primaries were disrupted in some areas, while in other cases candidates defected to opposition parties.

He added that the exercise must be completed before the Electoral Commission conducts nationwide nominations for LCI candidates, scheduled for July 15 to 19, 2026.
