Opendi Urges Women MPs to Unite as 12th Parliament Begins

Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA)

The outgoing Chairperson of the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA), Sarah Opendi, has urged all female Members of Parliament to join the association, emphasizing that unity is critical to advancing legislation and policies that benefit all Ugandans.

Speaking during the induction of the 12th Parliament, Opendi said UWOPA’s mandate goes beyond championing women’s rights, noting that the association also advocates for policies that promote the welfare of the entire population.

She said the gains made in increasing women’s participation in leadership were achieved through the efforts of pioneer female legislators and should be protected and built upon.

Opendi reminded legislators that women remain a minority in Parliament and must continue working together to strengthen their collective voice and influence legislative and policy decisions.

She also called for stronger efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV), citing police statistics indicating that of the 10,492 GBV cases reported last year, only 713 were concluded.

She said the low case disposal rate highlights the need for more effective investigations, prosecutions, and support services for survivors.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Public Service Lydia Wanyoto urged women MPs to advocate for greater representation in Parliament’s leadership, particularly on the Parliamentary Commission, following the election of a male Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

In remarks delivered on his behalf by Bukanga North MP Nathan Byanyima, Speaker Jacob Oboth encouraged women legislators to provide impactful, transformative leadership that contributes to national development.
