Museveni Appoints Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo Acting Education Minister

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, with immediate effect.

The appointment was announced on Thursday, 25 June 2026, in a statement issued by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU).

Dr. Muyingo, who has served as State Minister for Higher Education since 2011, will oversee the ministry in the absence of the substantive minister, Janet Museveni, who has reportedly been away from office due to ill health.

The Ministry of Education and Sports has effectively operated without a fully active political head since the beginning of the current government term.

Although Janet Museveni was reappointed to the portfolio, she did not appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting or take the oath of office due to her health condition.

Janet Museveni has served as Minister of Education and Sports since 2016, during which she has overseen major reforms, including curriculum reviews, expansion of Universal Secondary Education, and the rollout of competency-based learning.

Her health challenges are reported to have become more pronounced in the previous term, prompting the gradual delegation of key ministerial duties to Dr. Muyingo.
