The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has announced a nationwide industrial action and public sensitization campaign scheduled for 26 June 2026, coinciding with World Anti-Torture Day.
The planned action is intended to protest what the society describes as the increasing erosion of safeguards against torture, arbitrary detention, interference with the right to counsel, and intimidation of legal practitioners.
Speaking on behalf of the ULS, Honorary Secretary Ssali Babu said the strike is a constitutional intervention rather than a partisan or labour-related protest.
Under the theme, “When torture enters the courtroom, justice leaves the republic,” lawyers across the country have been directed to suspend court appearances and routine legal work, while continuing to provide emergency human rights services.
Advocates have also been encouraged to wear black attire, engage communities on the dangers of torture, and raise awareness on the importance of upholding the rule of law.
Babu said the peaceful action is aimed at defending constitutional rights, strengthening judicial independence, and promoting accountability within Uganda’s justice system.
