COSASE Chair Nkunyingi Calls for Independence in Oversight of Public Funds

COSASE Chair Nkunyingi Calls for Independence

The Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), Muwada Nkunyingi, has called on parliamentary leadership to safeguard the committee’s independence as it carries out its oversight mandate.

Speaking on Monday, Nkunyingi said COSASE must be allowed to execute its constitutional role without interference, noting that the committee is central to scrutinizing Auditor General’s reports and investigating the management of public resources.

He emphasized that the committee plays a key role in promoting accountability, value for money, and sound financial management across government agencies and state enterprises.

Nkunyingi said previous reviews of Auditor General’s reports had at times been undermined by external influence, weakening oversight efforts and limiting the implementation of committee recommendations.

He reaffirmed COSASE’s commitment to strengthening transparency and accountability in public institutions, adding that under his leadership the committee will thoroughly examine cases of corruption, financial mismanagement, and abuse of public funds.

He warned public officials implicated in the misuse of government resources that the committee will pursue all accountability measures provided for by law, stressing that no individual or institution would be exempt from scrutiny.

Nkunyingi further pledged to safeguard taxpayers’ money and ensure that government entities operate efficiently and in the public interest.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over corruption and renewed calls for stronger accountability mechanisms within government institutions.
