Judiciary Receives 118 Election Petitions, Vows Timely Resolution Within Six Months

Judiciary Receives 118 Election Petitions

The courts of law and the Judiciary have so far registered 118 election petitions arising from the recently concluded 2026 parliamentary and local government elections, according to Judiciary spokesperson James Ereemye Mawanda.

Mawanda said the Judiciary has already begun preparations to handle the cases and remains confident that all petitions will be concluded within the legally prescribed six-month period.

Speaking to journalists at the Supreme Court in Kampala, he noted that the Judiciary had anticipated an increase in election-related disputes and had undertaken capacity-building initiatives to ensure judicial officers are well prepared to manage the workload.

He revealed that as recently as last week, the Judiciary conducted training sessions for Justices of the Court of Appeal, which is expected to handle appeals arising from election petition rulings.

Mawanda said resource allocation is ongoing and that hearings of the petitions are expected to commence soon.

He also appealed to the public to remain calm and support the Judiciary in fulfilling its constitutional mandate of resolving election disputes.

In addition, he disclosed that Principal Judge Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo has already begun deploying judges across the country to ensure effective handling of the cases.

Judicial officers, he said, will be assigned based on operational needs and caseloads rather than external influence.
