Parliament Questions Delays in Medical Treatment Approvals for MPs

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa

Parliament has raised concern over the practice by the Uganda Medical Board of delaying or denying approval requests for Members of Parliament seeking specialized treatment abroad.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa said the delays place the lives of legislators at risk and could result in devastating consequences.

Tayebwa revealed that some MPs have in the past turned to Parliament leadership as a last resort while battling illnesses that required urgent medical attention.

He added that Parliament leadership is engaging the medical board to ensure immediate improvements in the approval process, similar to the arrangements currently accorded to ministers.

The Deputy Speaker made the remarks during the induction programme for Members of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
