The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has urged the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to support the implementation of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards among telecommunications companies ahead of their mandatory adoption in 2028.
ICPAU President, CPA Timothy David Ediomu, made the call during the 16th Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards Dinner held last night at Kampala Serena Hotel.
Speaking under the theme “Driving Sustainability Reporting through Technology and Innovation,” Ediomu called on UCC to collaborate with the institute in preparing telecommunications operators and other players in the sector for the new reporting requirements.
Uganda launched its roadmap for adopting the standards in 2025, with voluntary adoption beginning in 2026 and mandatory implementation scheduled for 2028.
The requirements will apply to listed entities, financial institutions, insurance firms and government business entities reporting under IFRS standards.
Ediomu said the standards would promote transparency, strengthen investor confidence and improve organisations’ access to financing by requiring them to disclose reliable and comparable information on sustainability-related risks and opportunities.
He also encouraged organisations to embrace early adoption to build institutional capacity and ensure they are adequately prepared before the 2028 deadline.
