The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director, George William Nyombi Thembo, has said Uganda is shifting its focus from bridging the digital connectivity gap to addressing the digital usage gap, following advancements in satellite internet technology.
Speaking at the 2026 Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards Dinner organised by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) at the Serena Hotel in Kampala last night, Nyombi Thembo said internet connectivity would increasingly become less of a challenge, citing the licensing of satellite internet provider Starlink.
He noted that the country’s priority should now be to ensure that Ugandans can effectively utilise available digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve social development.
Addressing professional accountants under the theme Driving Sustainability Reporting through Technology and Innovation, Nyombi Thembo highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence, data analytics, cloud computing and automation in strengthening corporate financial reporting.
He, however, cautioned organizations against overlooking cybersecurity, data protection and information integrity as they embrace digital transformation, stressing the need for responsible and secure use of technology.
The UCC Executive Director also called for stronger corporate governance, transparency and accountability, noting that credible financial reporting remains critical to attracting investment, promoting responsible business practices and building stakeholder confidence.
The 16th edition of the FiRe Awards recognized organizations that have demonstrated excellence in corporate financial reporting, while highlighting the importance of innovation and technology in promoting sustainable business practices.
