Fresh fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), allied Wazalendo militia fighters and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) rebel movement has been reported in several locations across North and South Kivu provinces, raising renewed concerns over efforts to secure a ceasefire in eastern DR Congo.
In North Kivu, clashes were reported in Kilongo and Mahanga villages in Nyamaboko I Groupement, Masisi Territory, where FARDC troops and their Wazalendo allies reportedly launched an offensive to dislodge FRN fighters from their positions.
Fighting was also reported in Kibati, Walikale Territory, while in South Kivu, clashes were reported in Nyamarhege, Lulaba and Chulwe localities in Nzibira Sector, as well as Kasika in Walungu Territory.
According to local sources, the fighting in South Kivu began at around 7:00 a.m. today.
Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the FRN, confirmed the clashes in a statement issued this afternoon, accusing government forces and their Wazalendo allies of launching attacks involving combat drones, fighter jets, heavy artillery and ground troops.
Kanyuka accused the government in Kinshasa of continuing to pursue a military solution despite repeated calls for de-escalation. He further alleged that the authorities were promoting hate speech and imposing war on civilian populations.
The FRN spokesperson maintained that the group’s fighters remained deployed on the ground, claiming that their operations were aimed at protecting civilians. He also described the group’s activities as being conducted with determination, discipline and professionalism.
The latest clashes come amid ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and promote stability in eastern DR Congo, where continued armed confrontations have raised concerns about the safety of civilians and the prospects for lasting peace.
However, the claims made by the FRN spokesperson regarding the attacks and the conduct of government forces had not been independently verified.
