Legendary Ugandan musician and saxophonist Moses Matovu will be laid to rest tomorrow, Friday, September 25, 2026, at his family’s ancestral grounds in Kyanja, on the outskirts of Kampala.
According to the burial programme released by the family, prayers for Matovu’s send-off will be held at Kibuli Mosque at 4:00 PM.
His body will then be taken to the National Theatre at 7:00 PM before being transported to Kyanja, where a night vigil will be held.
Matovu, popularly known as Papa Moi in musical circles, died suddenly on Thursday morning at the age of 77.
The legendary maestro and saxophonist spent more than five decades in Uganda’s music industry, becoming one of the country’s most recognised musical figures. He was particularly known for his long association with the Afrigo Band, where he served both as a member and later as its leader.
Matovu’s death comes less than a month after the passing of another prominent Ugandan musician, Alex Mukulu, adding to a period of mourning within the country’s music fraternity.
Among those mourning Matovu is Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, a long-time admirer of the celebrated musician.
Matovu’s burial is expected to bring together family, friends, fellow musicians, public figures and scores of fans who were touched by his music and decades-long contribution to Uganda’s entertainment industry.
