The Democratic Party (DP) has mourned the death of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom, calling on all responsible leaders to ensure that his successor is installed peacefully.
King Oyo died last week while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States.
Speaking to the media at the DP headquarters along Balintuma Road in Mengo today, the party’s Secretary General, Gerald Siranda, described the late King Oyo as a God-fearing, young, vibrant, and development-oriented leader who had a strong desire to see Tooro Kingdom and Uganda achieve greater social and economic development.
Siranda said Tooro Kingdom had nurtured King Oyo from childhood and guided him throughout his reign, during which the kingdom emerged as one of the fastest-growing cultural institutions in the country.
He said this achievement must be jealously protected during the succession process, urging all stakeholders involved in choosing and installing the next king to prioritise unity, peace, and stability.
Siranda also extended condolences to the people of Tooro Kingdom, the royal family, and all those mourning the death of King Oyo.
Meanwhile, Siranda dismissed reports of internal divisions within the DP leadership, describing the allegations as being spread by what he called “social media opportunists” seeking to attract followers and generate YouTube revenue.
He maintained that the party remains stable and said the DP will soon convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to discuss and chart the way forward for the party.
