Fifty-five independent Members of Parliament have signed a cooperation agreement with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), paving the way for closer collaboration between the legislators and the ruling party.
The agreement was announced by Government Chief Whip Ruth Aceng, who said the arrangement will allow the independent MPs to work with the NRM on parliamentary matters and participate in key party engagements.
According to Aceng, the legislators had earlier written to the NRM expressing their interest in cooperating with the party.
She explained that the agreement gives the 55 independent MPs access to NRM Parliamentary Caucus meetings, party consultations and decision-making processes, among other activities.
Aceng also invited willing independent MPs to attend the NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting scheduled for tomorrow at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel.
The group of signatories was led by their dean, Charles Ngabirano.
The agreement has been endorsed by 55 of the 68 independent MPs, leaving 13 legislators who have not signed the cooperation arrangement.
