The Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba, has identified inadequate funding as the biggest challenge facing the Uganda Police Force, saying it continues to hamper effective service delivery.
Byakagaba made the remarks while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs alongside officials from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda Prisons Service.
He told the committee that the force is grappling with several operational challenges, including staffing shortages, inadequate accommodation, limited office space, insufficient transport, and a lack of communication equipment.
The IGP also stressed the need for increased investment in modern technology, noting that the growing sophistication of crime requires advanced policing tools and greater financial support to effectively combat emerging security threats.
Despite the constraints, Byakagaba said the Uganda Police Force is implementing a series of administrative reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, decentralising policing services to the sub-county level, and strengthening intelligence capabilities.
