The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has vowed to withstand what it describes as continued intimidation and arrests of its supporters by government security agencies.
The party’s remarks follow reports that its Deputy President for the Buganda Region, Muwanga Kivumbi, was re-arrested after allegedly making remarks critical of the government on Friday.
NUP leaders dismissed the allegations, arguing that criticizing the government and highlighting its shortcomings is not a criminal offence.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, NUP spokesperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, said the party remains committed to speaking out on issues affecting Ugandans regardless of the consequences.
Ssenyonyi condemned what he described as the unlawful and inhumane re-arrest of Muwanga Kivumbi, accusing security agencies of targeting opposition leaders and supporters.
He also alleged that security agencies have continued to abduct individuals and detain them in undisclosed locations, saying such actions undermine the rule of law and due process.
Ssenyonyi further expressed concern over what he described as increasing intimidation by Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Gombolola Internal Security Officers (GISOs), and Parish Internal Security Officers (PISOs).
He claimed that individuals seeking NUP party tickets for Local Council I, Local Council II, and Women Council positions are being warned that they will not be declared winners unless they contest as independent candidates.
There was no immediate response from the government or security agencies to the allegations at the time of publication.
