The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has called on factories, including Mukwano Industries, to relocate to designated industrial parks as part of efforts to reduce pollution across the country.
According to NEMA Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, the lack of proper land zoning, particularly in Kampala Capital City, has contributed to the growth of mixed-use developments where industrial, commercial, and residential activities exist side by side.
Dr. Akankwasah explained that while mixed-use developments, such as shops, cafes, and service outlets on lower floors with residential apartments above, can create convenient and self-sustaining communities, they also contribute to various forms of pollution that affect residents.
He noted that Kampala has already evolved into a mixed-use city and that protecting the urban environment requires relocating certain facilities, especially factories, from densely populated areas to designated industrial parks.
Dr. Akankwasah said separating manufacturing activities from residential areas, medical facilities, hotels, sports venues, churches, and entertainment establishments would help improve environmental management and reduce the impact of pollution on communities.
